Gel in Bimatoprost helps to grow Eyelashes

A bimatoprost-containing eyelash product can enhance lash growth when used for six months.

The ingredient is used in a glaucoma treatment manufactured by Allergan and was found during original drug trials to have the secondary side effect of increasing eyelash length.

Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution (trade name Lumigan 3ml) is a medication used to manage glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It generally works by lowering the pressure in your eyes. This eye drop medication has also been found to be effective in growing eyelashes. It is usually applied once daily into the eye preferably at night when it’s best to use the eye drops.

Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is prescribed to patients who have not had an improved condition despite the use of other medications. This medication does not cure the eye problem, but instead controls the progression of the disease, thereby improving the patient’s eye health. Bimatoprost is classified as a prostaglandin analog, which relieves eye pressure.

When there is a great amount of unhealthy fluid in the eyes, pressure builds up resulting in eye conditions like glaucoma. Glaucoma is caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eyes and is characterized as painful, which may potentially lead to loss of vision. Glaucoma is more likely to occur as age increases. Another eye condition, ocular hypertension, may also be treated using bimatoprost.

Glaucoma and ocular hypertension are both eye conditions which can be worsened by pressure buildup in the eye. If these diseases are left untreated, the intense pressure can damage the nerves of the eye and potentially cause blindness. Using bimatoprost ophthalmic solution helps in relieving this pressure and can treat these conditions. The drug works by increasing the flow of the aqueous humor outside the eyes. This mechanism relieves the pressure and prevents pain and vision impairment.

The way bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is applied and used as a medication will depend on what it is used for. When it is prescribed as treatment for certain eye conditions, bimatoprost is applied as eye drops to be used once daily. For the purpose of growing eyelashes, it is in liquid solution to be applied on the skin of the eyelash line. It should not be applied on lower lashes to avoid growth of lashes in unwanted areas.

The side effects of Lumigan or bimatoprost may depend on how it is used for a certain condition. When used to treat conditions like glaucoma, the side effects include burning, itching, drying, or watering of the eyes, and these side effects are generally categorized as mild. When used for growing eyelashes, it is applied on to the eyelash line and the side effects may include skin browning near the site of application, and the possibility to have eyelash growing in unwanted areas. These side effects can be permanent but is not considered as life-threatening. Some of the serious side effects that require immediate medical care include eyelid swelling, sudden vision changes such as increased sensitivity to light, and fluid discharge from the eye.
